Laminated glass with the right interlayer

Tell us what the panel needs to do. Build a request for fragment retention, security, overhead glazing or a specified laminate make-up.

Laminated safety glass, toughened laminated glass and glass with structural or acoustic interlayers

Laminated glass combines glass plies with an interlayer. The layers help retain broken fragments, but the performance of the panel depends on the complete make-up rather than its total thickness alone. Describe each glass ply, the interlayer and the support arrangement when a specification is available.

Laminated glazing can be considered for windows, partitions, guarding and overhead projects. Annealed laminate and toughened laminate are different constructions. Acoustic, decorative and structural interlayers answer different briefs and should not be treated as interchangeable upgrades.

For a canopy, balustrade or other loaded installation, the designer needs to consider loads and behaviour after breakage. For security glazing, request evidence for the exact glass construction and framing system. The presence of an interlayer does not automatically establish a security rating.

Laminated glass with the right interlayer for your project

Common enquiry briefs include window or shopfront, overhead or canopy, balustrade, partition. Describe the intended use and the supporting construction so the supplier can assess the complete specification. Different applications can need different glass processing, fixings and installation details.

Retention is the starting point

An interlayer holds broken fragments together. The required security or structural performance needs its own specification.

Specify the layers

If available, include each ply, interlayer type and thickness rather than only the total depth.

What to include in a made-to-measure quote

Compare quotes using the same dimensions, quantities, finish, glass construction and installation scope. If you have a drawing or an existing specification, include its reference and identify which details still need advice.

  • Nominal laminated make-up: An overall thickness does not fully describe a laminate.
  • Interlayer requirement: Performance depends on the complete construction, not the interlayer name alone.
  • Treatment of the glass plies: Ask the supplier to confirm the required ply treatment.
  • Appearance: Colour and finish are requests; confirm a sample before ordering.

Cut-to-size dimensions, edges and fabrication

Measure the finished glass only when the fitting allowances and support details are known. Otherwise identify the opening or existing panel you measured and request a survey. Give each different size its own basket line, with its quantity and drawing reference.

Holes, cut-outs, shaped edges and interfaces with hardware should be settled before manufacture. The finished glass construction and any coatings must suit the intended environment. A screen preview or concept photograph cannot replace a sample, survey or product-specific installation drawing.

Supplier checks before manufacture

  • Security classifications require evidence for the exact product.
  • Overhead and guarding applications need confirmation of supports and post-breakage behaviour.

Requesting comparable glass quotes

Save the choices you know and ask for help with the rest. The quote basket records a specification request rather than placing a manufacturing order. A firm quote needs an agreed final build, dimensions, delivery arrangements and any installation or design work.

When comparing proposals, check that glass-only supply and supply with fitting cover the same scope. Ask who provides measurement, drawings, supports, compatible hardware, lifting access and finishing work. Keep the final approved specification with the order.

Examples and guidanceLaminated glass plies and bonded interlayer

An overall thickness does not fully describe a laminate.

Bonded laminated glass sectionTwo glass plies bonded in continuous contact through a solid interlayer; no sealed air gap. Interlayer thickness exaggerated.Nominal laminated make-upIllustrative schematic, not to scale or a fabrication / fixing specification.

What your choice means

Laminated glass consists of glass plies bonded through an interlayer. The assembled section has material in contact across the bond; an interlayer is not an insulating cavity.

Record each glass ply, its treatment, interlayer type and interlayer thickness. Nominal overall thickness is their combined depth, subject to the product tolerances; the rounded trade name alone does not specify the construction.

Examples you may seeIllustrative make-up: 3 mm glass + 0.38 mm interlayer + 3 mm glass is 6.38 mm before tolerances, often called 6.4 mm nominal.A named overall thickness still needs its individual plies and interlayer confirmed.Available choices: Help me choose; 6.4 mm nominal; 6.8 mm nominal; 8.8 mm nominal; 10.8 mm nominal; 12.8 mm nominal; Specified make-up in notes.Current choice: Help me choose. What your choice means

The interlayer bonds the glass plies. Standard PVB, acoustic PVB and structural or decorative interlayers are different product choices and are not interchangeable solely because their thicknesses match.

Request the exact manufacturer, type and thickness. Acoustic, security and structural claims must be supported for the proposed complete make-up, edge exposure and support conditions.

Examples and guidanceTreatment of the individual laminated-glass plies

Ask the supplier to confirm the required ply treatment.

What your choice means

Annealed laminate, toughened laminate and heat-soaked toughened laminate describe the treatment of the glass plies before they are bonded. Toughening is a process applied to a ply, not an extra material layer.

Confirm the treatment of each ply rather than assuming that both are identical. Heat-soak testing is a separate requested process; neither treatment nor overall thickness alone establishes post-breakage structural suitability.

Clear, low-iron, tinted, satin and decorative finishes alter transmitted light and appearance in different ways. Screen illustrations cannot establish the actual colour, privacy or surface texture.

Request a sample of the named product in the proposed thickness and finish. Agree which face is exposed and the orientation of any directional treatment before manufacture.

  • Overhead and guarding applications need confirmation of supports and post-breakage behaviour.

Useful questions

Can I get a quote before I know every detail?

Yes. Choose Help me choose where you need advice, or request a site measurement. Suppliers can review the brief; a firm manufacturing price needs an agreed final specification.

Does adding a panel place an order?

No. It saves a specification in your quote basket. Review the basket and provide your delivery details to request supplier quotes. Your configuration does not approve the product for installation.

What should I confirm for laminated glass?

Security classifications require evidence for the exact product. Overhead and guarding applications need confirmation of supports and post-breakage behaviour.
