Toughened glass, made for your project

Start with the job, add the finished panel size and specify the edges and fabrication before the glass is toughened.

Toughened safety glass, tempered glass and glass cut to size

Made-to-measure toughened glass is used for furniture, screens, doors and other projects that need a suitable safety-glass specification. The heat-treatment process changes the behaviour of the finished panel. Its thickness, supports, edge work and fabrication still need to suit the particular job.

A glass tabletop, frameless screen and balustrade infill are different design questions. Give the supplier the clear span, fixing arrangement and intended location. A thickness chosen from a menu does not establish structural suitability or an impact classification for the completed installation.

Polished edges, fixing holes, notches and hinge cut-outs need to be planned before toughening. Finished toughened glass cannot simply be cut down on site. A dimensioned drawing is especially useful when glass meets hardware, a sloping wall or an existing frame.

Common enquiry briefs include shower or screen, table or shelf, door or partition, balustrade infill. Describe the intended use and the supporting construction so the supplier can assess the complete specification. Different applications can need different glass processing, fixings and installation details.

Plan the processing first

Cutting and drilling happen before heat treatment. Include the hardware drawing when requesting a quote.

Support changes the specification

A supported shelf and a frameless screen need different design checks, even if their sizes match.

What to include in a made-to-measure quote

Compare quotes using the same dimensions, quantities, finish, glass construction and installation scope. If you have a drawing or an existing specification, include its reference and identify which details still need advice.

  • Thickness request: Thickness depends on support, span and use; it is not a structural approval.
  • Appearance: Colour and finish are requests; confirm a sample before ordering.
  • Exposed edges: Tell the supplier which edges remain visible after installation.
  • Holes and cut-outs: All fabrication must be agreed before toughening; finished toughened glass cannot be recut.

Cut-to-size dimensions, edges and fabrication

Measure the finished glass only when the fitting allowances and support details are known. Otherwise identify the opening or existing panel you measured and request a survey. Give each different size its own basket line, with its quantity and drawing reference.

Holes, cut-outs, shaped edges and interfaces with hardware should be settled before manufacture. The finished glass construction and any coatings must suit the intended environment. A screen preview or concept photograph cannot replace a sample, survey or product-specific installation drawing.

Supplier checks before manufacture

  • Confirm finished sizes, hole centres and edge clearances before manufacture.
  • Ask for the impact classification and any heat-soak requirement for the intended installation.

Requesting comparable glass quotes

Save the choices you know and ask for help with the rest. The quote basket records a specification request rather than placing a manufacturing order. A firm quote needs an agreed final build, dimensions, delivery arrangements and any installation or design work.

When comparing proposals, check that glass-only supply and supply with fitting cover the same scope. Ask who provides measurement, drawings, supports, compatible hardware, lifting access and finishing work. Keep the final approved specification with the order.

Choose a glass type

Toughened glass is safety glass. It is suitable for many internal and external applications, but the correct thickness and fixing method depend on the job.
