Frameless flat rooflights: design and installation choices

Create a simple view of the sky with a fixed rooflight and an unobtrusive glass edge. Plan the opening, supporting kerb and glazing together for a clean finish above your room.

A fixed flat rooflight brings overhead daylight through a low-profile glazed opening. A framed product and a frameless-style product have different perimeter details. Both need compatible support and waterproofing. Neither a subtle glass edge nor a slim frame removes the need for a complete installation design.

Consider the room's orientation, maintenance access and the balance between daylight, privacy and solar heat. Request the exact glazing make-up and glass-only or whole-product performance required by the project. Standard dimensions, roof pitch and installation details belong to a particular system, rather than to roof glazing in general.

Frameless flat rooflights for your project

Common enquiry briefs include kitchen extension, living or dining extension, minimal-frame roof glazing, replacement rooflight. Describe the intended use and the supporting construction so the supplier can assess the complete specification. Different applications can need different glass processing, fixings and installation details.

A simple glass perimeter

A polished edge and decorative border can give a less prominent perimeter. Agree the visible detail and sample before ordering.

Plan support and waterproofing

A frameless appearance still needs a designed support and protected edge seal. The finished kerb and roof membrane are part of that detail.

Choose your glazing

Request double or triple glazing and a clear, solar-control or satin appearance. The final glass build must suit the overhead location and supporting system.

What to include in a made-to-measure quote

Compare quotes using the same dimensions, quantities, finish, glass construction and installation scope. If you have a drawing or an existing specification, include its reference and identify which details still need advice.

  • What do your dimensions describe?: Opening, kerb, frame and glass sizes are different. Record the reference you measured; the supplier will agree the manufacturing size.
  • Glazing preference: An exact pane and cavity schedule will be agreed for the supplied rooflight.
  • Glass appearance: Solar control and privacy are different requirements. Ask for a sample and the light transmission and solar factor for the proposed glass.
  • Overhead glass specification: The complete build and intended location determine the safety specification. Include any designer's requirements in the notes.
  • Thermal and solar performance: Glass-only and whole-product U-values are different. Put target values and their assessment basis in the notes.
  • Roof and supporting kerb: Describe the roof fall, finished kerb width and height, membrane and supporting construction in the notes.
  • Daylight or ventilation?: This product is fixed. If it needs to open, request a separate opening-system proposal.
  • Supply and installation: Tell us about roof height, site access, lifting and waterproofing in the project notes.
  • Perimeter and edge detail: Frameless appearance still needs support, border coverage and protection for the insulating-glass edge seal.

Opening dimensions, kerbs and roof glazing

Record whether you measured the internal clear opening, external finished kerb, frame or existing glass. These are different references. Rooflight size charts and lantern ordering drawings must not be interchanged; the supplier agrees the manufacturing dimensions for the chosen system.

Holes, cut-outs, shaped edges and interfaces with hardware should be settled before manufacture. The finished glass construction and any coatings must suit the intended environment. A screen preview or concept photograph cannot replace a sample, survey or product-specific installation drawing.

Supplier checks before manufacture

  • Confirm the dimension reference before manufacture. The researched size chart uses internal opening dimensions; do not use these as external frame or glass sizes.
  • Agree the supporting kerb, roof fall, border coverage, edge protection and waterproofing using the supplied system’s current drawing.
  • Confirm the exact overhead safety build, thermal performance and site wind and snow requirements. This fixed rooflight is not a walk-on product.
  • Use the frameless system’s own installation drawing; framed profile dimensions must not be transferred to it.

Requesting comparable glass quotes

Save the choices you know and ask for help with the rest. The quote basket records a specification request rather than placing a manufacturing order. A firm quote needs an agreed final build, dimensions, delivery arrangements and any installation or design work.

When comparing proposals, check that glass-only supply and supply with fitting cover the same scope. Ask who provides measurement, drawings, supports, compatible hardware, lifting access and finishing work. Keep the final approved specification with the order.

Opening size, kerb size, frame size and glazing size are different dimensions. Use the supplied roof system’s stated measurement basis and section drawing before manufacture.

Confirm roof fall, upstand or kerb, drainage, edge cover, weathering and the specified overhead safety glazing. Opening systems also need operating clearances and controls; an ordinary rooflight is not automatically walk-on glazing.

Examples and guidanceSealed-unit panes, cavities and edge seal

An exact pane and cavity schedule will be agreed for the supplied rooflight.

What your choice means

An insulating glass unit has separate glass panes around one or more sealed cavities. At the perimeter, a spacer maintains separation, with the specified edge-seal system closing the unit. The cavity contains the specified dry air or gas.

A double-glazed unit has two panes and one cavity; a triple-glazed unit has three panes and two cavities. Specify pane types and treatments, cavity widths, spacer, gas and seal compatibility separately.

What your choice means

Solar-control products balance transmitted daylight, solar heat gain and reflected appearance. Orientation, shading, room use and the full glazing construction affect the choice.

Request visible light transmission, solar factor and reflectance for the named build-up. A tinted appearance alone does not specify solar performance; compare a sample and review thermal-stress requirements with the supplier.

What your choice means

A low-emissivity coating changes radiant heat transfer at a glass surface. It is a thin surface treatment, not another glass pane. Confirm the named coating and its permitted position in the proposed glazing.

3. Sizes and fabrication notes

3Size and quantity

Enter the dimensions for your selected measurement reference. Rooflights commonly use internal opening sizes; lanterns use external finished kerb sizes. These are not glass cutting dimensions. If unsure, request a site measurement.

Before you choose

The decisions that matter

01

A simple glass perimeter

A polished edge and decorative border can give a less prominent perimeter. Agree the visible detail and sample before ordering.

02

Plan support and waterproofing

A frameless appearance still needs a designed support and protected edge seal. The finished kerb and roof membrane are part of that detail.

03

Choose your glazing

Request double or triple glazing and a clear, solar-control or satin appearance. The final glass build must suit the overhead location and supporting system.

Ready for a useful supplier quote

  • Confirm the dimension reference before manufacture. The researched size chart uses internal opening dimensions; do not use these as external frame or glass sizes.
  • Agree the supporting kerb, roof fall, border coverage, edge protection and waterproofing using the supplied system’s current drawing.
  • Confirm the exact overhead safety build, thermal performance and site wind and snow requirements. This fixed rooflight is not a walk-on product.
  • Use the frameless system’s own installation drawing; framed profile dimensions must not be transferred to it.

Research behind these choices

Reviewed 23 October 2026. Manufacturer guidance and supplier ordering pages inform these design questions. Agree the final construction and project requirements with your supplier.

Useful questions

Can I get a quote before I know every detail?

Yes. Choose Help me choose where you need advice, or request a site measurement. Suppliers can review the brief; a firm manufacturing price needs an agreed final specification.

Does adding a panel place an order?

No. It saves a specification in your quote basket. Review the basket and provide your delivery details to request supplier quotes. Your configuration does not approve the product for installation.

What should I confirm for frameless rooflight?

Confirm the dimension reference before manufacture. The researched size chart uses internal opening dimensions; do not use these as external frame or glass sizes. Agree the supporting kerb, roof fall, border coverage, edge protection and waterproofing using the supplied system’s current drawing. Confirm the exact overhead safety build, thermal performance and site wind and snow requirements. This fixed rooflight is not a walk-on product. Use the frameless system’s own installation drawing; framed profile dimensions must not be transferred to it.
